At the British Rover
Company, we know our Land Rovers. Visit us, test us and let us prove to
you that we are the foremost authority on pre-owned Land Rovers in the
USA. Here are a few nuggets of Land Rover information
from our extensive knowledge:
Land Rover have many firsts, probably the most impressive is due to the
versatility and off road prowess of the early Land Rover. They became
the vehicle of choice for exploration and aid. It is estimated that the
first ever vehicle seen by just over 40% of the world's population was a
Land Rover. From the first overland journey from London to Singapore (A
12,000 mile epic by 6 Cambridge students taking over 7 months)
to the more recent 1996 first vehicular crossing of Borneo taking 21
days traveling 1100 miles, crossing 9 major rivers and 2 mountain
ranges. If a spectacular and epic journey has just been taken by vehicle
for the first time, it's usually in a Land Rover.
Over 72% of all the Land Rovers ever built are still on the road (or
farm).
What makes the above even more impressive is that Land Rovers don’t
always have the easy Floridian life. They have always been built at Land
Rover's manufacturing plant in Solihull, Birmingham and exported from
Great Britain to over 120 countries. They have become the farm
workhorse, doing everything from plowing fields to cutting timber,
taking the produce to market and, after a good scrub, providing
transport for the family.
Why did Land Rover build an aluminum vehicle? In 1947 Britain was still
recovering from WWII. Rationing for the public was still in effect and
steel was in very short supply. There was a ready supply of aluminum
available from the war time production of aircraft, which was now
surplus. Due to the low steel content, mainly the frame rails and
outriggers, Land Rover was given enough resources by the government to
start production in 1948.
In fact, Land Rovers still use aluminum in the construction of the
present day vehicles, one reason for this is to keep the weight down. A
present day Range Rover still tips the scale at some 5800lb.
Think your Range Rover is pretty? It may amaze you to learn that a Range
Rover is one of the few vehicles to be displayed in the famous Louvre
museum in Paris, France.
Remember: "Jeep may
be famous, but Land Rover is legendary."
